Straight Facts About Alcohol Use

  • Fact: Most people who use alcohol use it safely throughout their lives.
  • Fact: Only a small number of people choose to abuse alcohol to the point of undergoing tolerance and withdrawal or of suffering severe personal damage--i.e. alcohol "addiction".
  • Fact: The more alcohol used at a younger age the more likely that a problem will arise--the younger you are the better to be cautious with alcohol.
  • Fact: Control of your alcohol use is a personal choice and not a disease--anyone can quit without AA if they so choose.
  • Fact: Getting drunk on occasion is not a "diseased" behavior--it is within the realm of normalcy.
  • Fact: "Maturing out" of alcohol misuse without treatment is normal.
  • Fact: Alcohol poisoning is a reality.
  • Fact: You don't have to be ashamed to say "no" if it is your personal choice.
  • Fact: There is no such thing as a "gene for alcoholism."
  • Fact: Drinking before a test will hurt and not help.
  • Fact: Everyone does best when they make up their own minds for themselves--even people under the age of 21.
